Product Design

I offer on-site and off-site design services. I work with Solidworks and Creo. When starting a design, I follow the following steps below.

Process

Starting from your product idea, I investigate the needs of the end user, similar existing products, available production facilities, applicable standards, legislation and certifications, inspiring design styles and much more. This essential phase will contribute for a big part to the success of the product. The output of this phase is an extended specification list and a draft project timeline.
I propose and investigate several architectures, optional product features, production processes, assembly methods, packaging and distribution. I consult with different stakeholders (end users, customers, suppliers and production, logistics and procurement departments. I propose different aesthetic designs. The final step is to discuss and choose the final concept and project timeline together.
I elaborate the concept into a completely detailed 3D-CAD assembly. If useful, I make a mock-up and test it. I collaborate with different stakeholders to use their expertise. I create output adjusted to your company’s working process. I make sure a bill of materials (BOM) can be exported with all the necessary info for the producer/buyer to make/buy each component.
I create 2D-drawings, BOMs, assembly instructions and key documents accessible by team members to gather feedback in an organized way. I finalize the tooling and packaging.
A detailed test plan makes sure the tests have the maximum output and cover all risks. Key documents make sure no valuable feedback is lost.

Mechanical Engineering

If you need an experienced and skilled designer for a mechanical project, you can rely on my broad experience. I will create an overview of the project from problem analysis to a tested and easy-to-make mechanical product. I have broad experience in the following domains:

- IoT (mechanical hardware)- Cooling- Design for reliability- Sound and vibration damping- Strength calculation- Tooling design- Packaging design- Testing- EMC shielding- Design for safety- Design for production, assembly, cost and packaging- Design for SKF certification (burglar-proof solutions)

Process

I will investigate following questions: Which problem must the mechanic product solve? How does the mechanic product interfere with the system it is part of? Which solutions already exist? Which stakeholders can be consulted? If not available, I define the specification list. I make a project planning.
I propose and investigate several solutions. I plan design meetings together with the stakeholders and choose the final concept. If necessary I refine the planning.

Value Engineering

I add or optimize features appreciated by the end user and decrease the production costs at the same time. Typically, I increase the value by finding and decreasing the cost drivers, eliminating components and processes, prioritizing the needs of the end user and looking for opportunities to better answer those needs.

Process

I research the existing product and competing products that will serve as a starting point for the project. I first create a full understanding of the product. I search for the biggest cost drivers and I consult the stakeholders (end users, customers, suppliers and production, logistics and procurement departments). I determine the difficulties that were solved in the original project.
Having a full product understanding, I can then see which benefits can be easily implemented and what are the best opportunities to lower the costs and improve functionality. Each proposal will be elaborated into a concrete solution in partnership with stakeholders. Now, I will make a detailed project planning.
